It’s easy to upcycle an old bedside table into a cute play oven that your mini-masterchef will love. Dave and Stella Lennox show us how.

Tools required

  • Paintbrushes – 1 medium brush and a smaller detailing brush
  • Electric sander or sanding block
  • Ruler and pencil
  • Screw gun or screwdriver

You’ll need...

  • A cabinet, preferably with one drawer and one cupboard
  • Paint test pots – we have chosen Resene 'Cut glass' for the unit (4 test pots), 'Baltic sea' for the knobs and clock (1 test pot) and 'Aluminium silver' for the oven door and elements (1 test pot)
  • 4 large round plastic lids (we used formula tin lids) for the elements
  • 4 milk bottle lids
  • 4 drink bottle spouts
  • 1 small rectangular tin for the clock
  • Sandpaper
  • Screws

Step 1

Remove the handles on the cabinet. Sand all surfaces and wipe the unit down.

Step 2

Paint the cabinet in your desired colour – you’ll need two coats.

Step 3

Lightly sand your plastic lids and bottle tops to give them a rough surface the paint will stick to. Wipe your lids and bottle tops then paint them – you’ll need two coats.

Step 4

Get creative: mark out the shape of an oven door window with ruler and pencil, then paint inside the lines. Consider blackboard paint so your kids can draw what’s cooking!

Step 5

Rinse your fine brush then add some detailing to the knobs and clock. Attach your knobs, elements and clock securely using the screw gun and screws.

Step 6

Screw the handle back on to the door and your oven is complete! You can accessorise by adding hooks to the side and adding a tea towel or oven mitt.
